It adds one more link in the chain of mail that usually includes /usr/ucb/Mail (or equivalent) and uux (and friend uucico). The database to support smail can be LARGE or small. It is your option. smail does one thing that the user agent and uux do not usually do... they make the mail RFC-822 compliant. This is getting more and more important as the internet becomes more expansive. By the way, if you are a private node, then you would have to send an AWFUL lot of mail to chew up most of the CPU power of on any reasonable computer (80286, 68000 and up). For "multi-user" nodes, mail is just like any other function. If it is important, then resources will be made available.
