I don't quite see why you should be able to throw ! routes at wiscvm.wisc.edu and hope to get away with it: it's not advertized as a UUCP->bitnet gateway, and if it is the connection is not via UUCP so it may not be expecting a ! route anyway... The second example actually seems to work properly, since you are an internet site so @ should have precedence (as defined). I would hope though that the corresponding route also works. My point is that when sending through advertized gateways route conversion should be done transparently. If only that worked the world would already be much simpler. As with sending to random sites and hoping they will do something sensible, its Random In, Random Out. Kudos to the local mail wizard: our mailer works just fine, thank you.
