No flamage necessary.

If you're really curious, the huge read() was in "ispell", when it goes to
suck in the entire dictionary hash table [about 120Kb].

Under "Portability Considerations" in the Vax C book, appendix A:

	read		Equivalent functionality.

It did *not* say

	read		See the RMS book.
