for an implementation of system(), see page 224 of 'The UNIX Programming
Environment' by Kernighan and Pike (Prentice-Hall, ISBN 0-13-930699-2,
ISBN 0-13-937681-X {PBK}, copyright 1984).  if someone from bell labs
is reading this, permission to publish this fragment of code would be
nice...since it is such a glaring omission from the VAXC RTL!
