VT100 bugs Message-ID: <218@uscacsc.UUCP> Date: Wed, 10-Jun-87 01:36:55 EDT Article-I.D.: uscacsc.218 Posted: Wed Jun 10 01:36:55 1987 Date-Received: Sun, 14-Jun-87 01:38:49 EDT Reply-To: papa@uscacsc.UUCP (Marco Papa) Distribution: world Organization: Felsina Software, Los Angeles Lines: 72 Keywords: Diga!, terminal Emulation, VT100 I just run VTTest with Diga! VTTest is a program from Per Linberg of the University of Stokholm in Sweden (sorry if I misspelled anything) that was sent out over a year ago on USENET and that tests almost ALL of the VT100 features (VT52 and VT102 also). These are the results (and the bad news for Aegis): 1. Fails the cursor control test in one spot on the bottom right corner in both 80 and 132 character mode. 2. Fails control characters inside escape sequences. 3. Fails the Wrap Around test (this breaks EVERYTHING!). 4. Fail the black on white, white on black test. Allows only white on black. 5. Does Bold in Red (funny since the Amiga does bold quite nicely). 6. Does not have the graphics font in either 80 or 132 char mode. The lack of graphics fonts makes it unusable with VAX VMS-based editors (EDT, TPU, EVE). For example, boxes and diamonds are not there. 7. It does not have the Alternate ROM font. Basically it has 2 fonts: a font for 80 char/line and a font for 128/132 char/line. That's it. 8. Prints garbage on the screen when double height or double width characters are requested. Most other VT100 emulators will just print the character at normal size, but without garbage. 9. Prints garbage when the LED escapes are sent. 10. Does not work in VT52 mode. 11. PF1-PF4 are not automatically active with the correct sequence. That is, you must get a VT100 manual, check the escapes and associate them with function keys. Most other programs use F1-F4 on the Amiga to emulate PF1-PF4. Not everybody has a VT100 manual handy! 12. The "," on the VT100 keypad is not emulated. Again you must do the job by yourself as in 11. 13. Fails the Set/Reset of Newline Mode (another big bug). 14. Fails Report Terminal Status. 15. Fails Cursor Position Report (this is pretty bad, too). 16. Fails Terminal Parameter Report. 17. Does not support VT102 escapes for delete lines, delete chars, insert lines, insert chars. 18. Fails Reset command. I did not try to test whether it supports the "real VT100 bugs" that are present in a VT100 from DEC, since it has got no chance given the above results. You might notice that, besides other commercial comm programs, Dave Wecker's VT100 pd emulator properly handles almost all of the above. It looks that the widely advertised "custom" emulator of Diga! just does not work. -- Marco -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Marco Papa 3175 S.
