This hasn't come up in a while, so let's go again. But before I get started,
let me suggest to Ed Puckett that he post his P: device. Taps sound
interesting, and I'd like to play with them without having to do them
myself. Suggestions for others will be dropped at will.

Uh, almost consistent? Let's see, I've got a slew of assigned names,
and the following devices: PIPE, VDK, PAR, SER, RAW, CON, DF0, DF1,
PRT, and RAM. Gee, it's an even split as to how many support Examine
and ExNext. Most of them have file names associated with them, and I
can think of logical things for most of them to do with those packets.
That's not almost consistent; that's about as far as you can get from
consistency. Hey, CATS - how about putting that in for 1.3?

<Oh, a final note: it's nice to have a root in which to look at a name
<space. That's why devices on Unix live in the file system in /dev
<-- it's not a peculiarity, it's a very basic feature of a uniform
<name space. It would be very nice if we could do "dir ::" or something
<and discover a list of all devices.

Hmm. You seem to be suffering some confusion, but it could be me. I'll
take it to e-mail, but leave one request for Matt:

Matt, the Unix-like shells on VMS take /dev/dir/path/to/a/file and
turn it into dev:[dir.path.to.a]file. Have you considered making your
shell do that kind of thing while it was globbing?
