I'm sure you've done this but do you reset the terminal baud rate to 1200(or 300 on older systems) after power up? Another strange thing I've seen is if you have something connected to the "contty" port, it may interfere with the console port. Also I've seen some strange behavior attributable to the terminal settings(line vs char mode). Also for some odd reason the console may not respond when in single user mode. The quick fix for this is to type in stty sane ^j (That's control j). I don't think this is your problem though since you are hung in IAU mode. Hope this helps!
