Thanks everybody for your help. I have now a regex(3)-superset that works
just fine on my lowly XT. For those who are interested, it is in the
comp.sources archive under the title "v07i021". Contact your favorite
archive site.

I am told that Henry Spencer (utzoo!henry) has an implementation of the
SYSV variation (regcmp) and that this too is archived in comp.sources.
Already being satisfied, I haven't verified this.
