What are the symptoms of a Squashed file when using ARC?

At various times I have downloaded .ARC files, only to discover
that I couldn't DeArc them, I assumed that there was some sort of 
transmission problem (Yes I know all about binary transfers and have
successfully transferred .COM and .EXE files).  

Now I have PKARC and PKXARC.  But I'll bet that Squashing was my problem
all along(????).  Needless to say, I've long since forgotten all the 
useful (??) programs that I gave up on.
