Thanks to the 10+ (!) people that responded to my request for help in
implementing UnpackBits.  As it turned out, the reason I was having so
much trouble was not the code I wrote, but rather a faulty mac FTP
driver that mistakenly translated CR into LF even when I was in binary
(image) mode.  Thus the Paint file I was looking at was invalid data
and could never have been properly unpacked.

Anyway, thanks to all who helped - this group really is a great
resource.
