The NEC works, although the color fidelity isn't as good as for
the Apple monitor.

There's some suggestion that Apple's sync signal should be piped to
the NEC's sync line, as in:

				CABLE
	NEC DE9 Description     Apple video card ("DB"-15)
	1       Red             2 Red
	2       Green           5 Green
	3       Blue            9 Blue
	4       Composite Sync  3 CSync
	5       V. Sync         N/C or 1 Ground
	6,7,8,9 Ground          1 Ground

but I haven't tried this personally.  Certainly the cable needs to
be well-shielded to avoid picking up interference from things like
hard disk stepper motors.
