So far, the only thing I've found that makes the SE fan endurable for long periods is to be in the next room. (Of course, there are some obvious disadvantages.) It's really a shame, because I've been quite happy with the SE except for the noise. A friend of mine has a Symbolics Lisp machine in his office, and it's even noisier than the Mac SE. I plan to use the same technique he uses -- go to a gun shop and get some hearing protectors. They're the things that look like earmuffs that you see on people who work at airport runways.
