I always thought that using the odd blocks between the bad sector info (DEC bad144 format, the first five even block of the last track) would be a good idea. (we might have to run Ultrix at some time ...). Well, then maybe it's a good idea to do it their way. When are the tables read in, at boot time, at first access to the drive, or when partition 'a' is mounted? I would guess at boot time. My method has the advantage that you can piggyback partitioning info onto the bad block processing, which has to be done first anyway. Plus, the area is guaranteed to be good.
