Summary: SCO XENIX 2.1.0 L.sys: included blanks?

is there a way to include a blank in a send string for an
entry in /usr/lib/uucp/L.sys?  hp (hp-ux) has included \s for 
this purpose but the same thing doesn't work in SCO xenix.
escaping with a backslash and quoting don't work either.
any help would be appreciated.
