Summary: really an easily corrected Sys V dependency

The equivalent for "index" in Sys V is "strchr".  Just change all
the calls from "index" to "strchr".

By the way, it was the Sys V people, not the Berkeley folks, that
changed the name from index to strchr.  index was the older name.
