The Korn shell certainly looked like it would do that since it's available for DOS as the MKS Toolkit and for the PLUS from ASPEN Technologies. The MKS Toolkit is another story, but I wanted to let PLUS owners know about a *super* package. First you have to understand that ASPEN says that it's for Microport System V/AT. That's true, but if you change the device name in the installation instructions from "/dev/dsk/f048" to "/dev/dsk/f09dt", you are on your way. This shell is *FAST*! History editing and a bunch of other nice features make it (to me) well worth the $125. It's available from (MC & Visa OK) ASPEN Technologies, Inc. P.O. Box 5727 Parsippany, NJ 07054 (201) 316-0866 [they accept collect calls for orders] It's a breeze to install and it does just what they say it does. They say that Job Control is not implemented and they explain why they sent it as a small model program (performance). There are two flavors, eksh for EMACS in line editing and vksh for vi in line editing. The ksh script they supply examines your environment for EDITOR/VISUAL and does the right thing. I wish all versions of the Korn Shell were as reliable and effortless. -- Bill Kennedy {cbosgd | ihnp4!petro | sun!texsun!rrm}!ssbn!bill
