For carry on a request for hand search generally works. although I did have one "vaseline for brains" at DC national try to take everything apart, and then started on the camera stuff. WARNING: when you get tired of them looking in at around and over, and when one of them (the inspectors) holds up something obvious (telephoto lens, printer cable, whatever) and asks "duhhhh whats this" under no circumstances get cute and say "atom bomb".
