We have successfully transferred a MS Word document file from an XT to a
Mac, and the document was totally editable, and retained the format
specifications of the original file.  In our case, we used kermit to 
upload from the XT to a VAX with Ultrix, then used kermit to download 
to the Mac.  The only problem we encountered in the whole process was in
getting all the kermits to use a binary transfer rather than a text
transfer.  

On the Mac, MS Word recognized the document as coming from an IBM version
of Word, and did some sort of translation.  But the result was a file as
editable on the Mac as it was on the XT.
