Co., Inc., Everett, WA Lines: 102 Keywords: Word 3.01 update Summary: copied from MS Word 3.01 documentation This has been taken from the "Read Me" document that has been delivered with the MS Word 3.01 disks: -------------------------------------------------- NOTE TO WORD 3.0 USERS: YOU'LL NOTICE THESE IMPORTANT CHANGES IN WORD 3.01 * You should now personalize your master disk; for details, see "Getting Started" in the Learning Microsoft Word manual. If you will be installing Word on a file server, be sure to personalize Word before you copy it to the server. [Jeff's Note: Your name and company pop up every time the program starts up]. * The first time you use Word 3.01, the menus will revert to their original state. You will need to add or delete fonts, sizes, formats, or Work menu items again. However, Word does retain the changes you made by clicking any "Set Default" button. * To ensure that all your Word 3.0 documents print correctly, you should perform the following procedure for each document: open the document in Word 3.01, hold down the Shift key while selecting Repaginate from the Document menu, and immediately save the document. [Jeff's Note: Swell.] * When you are printing multiple copies on the LaserWriter, Word now prints faster by creating only one print job. * When you print using Page Setup's "Next File" option, the documents are opened and closed as needed instead of all being opened at the beginning. * In the Print command (for LaserWriter), Reduce/Enlarge scales only the text and not the margins. To fit more text on the page, you must increase the paper size in Page Setup and set the reduction percentage in Print. * When you choose Page Preview, you cannot change page breaks or margins unless Reduce/Enlarge is set to 100%. However, Page Preview does show the effects of the reduction or enlargement. * In the Print dialog box for LaserWriter, the "Fractional Widths" checkbox replaces the Quality options. This checkbox lets you use the LaserWriter's fractional character widths feature, which produces better output for some documents. Specifically, spacing between characters and words may look better when printed with "Fractional Widths" checked. * When you print a document using the "Fractional Widths" option, you will notice that for small fonts, text displayed on the screen overflows the right margin. This is normal and does not affect printing. * When you choose Quit, Word will prompt you to save changes for each document. * Word lets you use all fonts in the System, except those with names starting with a period (.) or percent sign (%). Fonts are arranged alphabetically on the Font menu and in the Character dialog box. There is no limit to the number of fonts you can use. However, the Font menu has room for only 31 fonts and sizes. * The "Word Underline" character format will not underline tabs or nonbreaking spaces. * Press -Shift-Z to remove character formats from text; the font and size, position, and spacing are not affected. (This was the function of the Plain Text command in Word 1.0.) You use the Plain Text command to restore selected characters to the character format defined for the style of that paragraph. * In Spelling, if you click "No Change" when Word presents a word, Word will ignore that word for the rest of the session. However, Word will continue to display these words as it scans the document. * When you choose Find, Spelling, or Hyphenate, Word scans the entire document only once. * When typing measurements in text boxes, you can now type a quote mark (") to indicate inches. * When you format text in multiple columns (using the Section command), you can force a column break by inserting a page break character with Shift-Enter. The "Page Break Before" paragraph option will always insert a page break before the selected paragraph. * NumLock now appears in the lower left corner instead of showing as "N" in the upper right corner of the menu bar. -------------------------------------------------- "Nice shooting, son.
