I disagree 100 percent. There is a page and a half of notations in the 
1987 /usr/group Unix Products Directory under the heading "REAL TIME".
Masscomp, who makes (among other things) real time data acquisition
unix boxes, is one of the manufacturers listed. They supplied the real
time data acquisition equipment that was sent into space to monitor the 
(Halleys?) comet fly-by.
