Which to use for a particular file depends on what you want to do with the file, which I should point out is not constant for a given file, and on a multiuser machine may even be more than one thing at a time. The guy trying to find a place to put the turkey wants to know how much medium it occupies while the owner wants to know how many words are in his file so he'll know when he can turn it in.
