In our fsck (MtXinu 4.3 bsd - perhaps in ordinary 4.3 too) there is code
to make a lost+found directory if it does not exist - and to grow it if
it runs out of free slots. I've never tried deliberately removing a
lost+found directory and corrupting a file system to see if it works
though.
