I know this borders on heresy to ask, especially since a grep of the
spool dir revealed no trace of the string "curses", but has anybody
thought about a sort of micro-X built with curses?  It would have only
windows and text and positioning, and maybe network comm, but that would
be enough for some applications.  Only advantage is backwards compatibility
(although there is still a lot of backwardness to be compatible with!).
If enough people retch on this idea, I'll get a brainwipe... :-)
