Don't laugh too hard .... one of the "major" line printer spoolers does exactly what he sugests ... MDQS from the nice folks at BRL. You can spool things to any sort of daemon, including a "shell" daemon. Multiple queues to any device, multiple devices hanging off a queue, and all sorts of nice features.
