From: hplabs!sun!sunup!chn@tektronix (Carl Nelson) Press Release: Independent Smalltalk Programmers and Developers Association to support Smalltalk programmers and users. The Object Oriented Programming for Smalltalk Application Developers Association, known as OOPSTAD, was formed in August of 1987, and is an independant nonprofit organization, not directly affiliated with any one supplier of Smalltalk. OOPSTADUs broad goal is to help programmers, developers and users of Smalltalk in their efforts to develop applications for either commercial or personal use. HOOPLA (Hooray for Object Oriented Programmming Languages),a quarterly newsletter will debut at the OOPSLAU87 conference October 4-8 in Kissimme Florida. OOPSTAD will maintain a bulletin board for questions and answers and bits of gossip, as well as a software library and clearinghouse for those who wish to make available Smalltalk code to others. There are approximately 15,000 owners of some version of Smalltalk, who can benefit from a newsletter and bulletin board services. For those deciding whether or not to use Smalltalk, Hoopla will provide advice on the considerations and pitfalls of doing a project or application in Smalltalk. Novices will find tutuorials and help in taking those first steps. For those already using Smalltalk, Hoopla will be a place where they can share experiences and code. Those already accomplished in writing Smalltalk Applications can pass on their words of wisdom to those that come after. HOOPLA will be a forum where the future of Smalltalk is discussed by those doing research and implementing new ideas. HOOPLA is written by people who are familiar with writing Smalltalk Applications. Dan Ingalls from the orginal Smalltalk team will contribute regular articles and sit on the editorial board. Sam Adams from Knowledge Systems, manager of the North Carolina State University AI Lab, will contribute his words of wisdom and software goodies that help in developing commercial grade applications. Members of Evelyn VanordenUs group that wrote ANALYST (the orignal Smalltalk integrated spreadsheet/graphic/word processing/mapping/ETC... program) and HUMBLE at XEROX Special Information Systems will contribute articles concerning Smalltalk Application Development. Kent Beck (formerly from Tektronix, now at Apple) will contribute a regular column on Smalltalk programming style. Technical contributions from various Smalltalk implementors are planned. In addition our members will be expected to contribute ideas, articles, source code and criticisms to the newsletter. Corporate and Institutional memberships are $250. Individuals can join for $25 ($35 International). To join send a check along with name, organization, address, (and electronic address if avaialble) to: OOPSTAD P.O. Box 1565 Everett, WA 98206-1565 Members can also register by dialing up (206) 252-9048 (300/1200/2400baud) and registering on-line with our bulletin board. For an additional $35 per year individuals ($250 Corporations and Institutions) can gain access to Smalltalk goodies contributed by our members. We have a very liberal contributors policy to encourage our members to contribute and share their code. Corporations or Institutions wishing to have a section of the bulletin dedicated to their software or products can become bulletin board sponsors.
