I don't really want to re-invent the wheel. Incidentally, thanks to everyone who responded to my "bizarre problem". It turned out that the comms. box had a data-link escape character in nonvolatile RAM, by default set to control/P. On the two 'defective' ports, it had mutated to null - only one bit different. It turns out that DCL inserts a null in front of its prompt - nothing else seems to. The comms box was supposed to ignore DLE unless connected to an interactive terminal, but had a minor firmware bug and blackholed everything up to the next output . Nigel Arnot (Dept.
