Due to the possible 'added complexity' of modifying my source via some of the suggestions, I think that assigning SYS$OUTPUT and SYS$ERROR through $RUN/DETACH is the quickest and best solution. Thanks for the help. I am writing "yet another" Idle Job Killer (that runs detached -- of course) and I am tired of seeing SYS$OUTPUT. and SYS$ERROR. "locked by another user" messages on our console when he Operators do daily backups... BTW, Why write another Idle Job Killer? (Why climb a mountain?) Because it is a crazy thing to do. This Job Killer only kills interactive jobs where all subprocesses are inactive.
