The default format is IBM NETDATA which even some bitnet sites can't unpack. However, the LISTSERV documentation you posted does indicate a couple of command forms that request a specific format. Anyone who receives a file from a bitnet LISTSERV in a "peculiar" format should try: GETPP filename filetype (as in mail to LISTSERV@BROWNVM.bitnet containing the message: GETPP APPLE2-L 87-00028 the "GETPP" specifically requests a file in PUNCH format).
