It happens quite often that we are unable to use the modem, because 'cu' and 'uucico' cannot access the device. The problem persists until we execute the following command /etc/pump /dev/modem /lib/pump/eports where /dev/modem is the tty-line to the modem. After this command, everything works alright again.
