It looks like Byte uses the standard Intel method of benchmarking. Take the best 80386 compiler you can find, the take a mediocre '020 compiler, run them aginst each other and call it a CPU vs. CPU test. For two indepent sets of benchmarks, see IEEE Micro Vol 6, No 4, pp 53-58 "A Benchmark Comparison of 32-bit Microprocessors" and IEEE Micro Vol 7 No 3 "A Synthetic Instruction Mix for Evaluating Microprocessor Performance" The former shows (using the EDN benchmarks) that the 020 is about 1.75 times faster then the 386. I've posted a summary of the results from these articles to comp.sys.mac.
