Thanks very much to the professor at Oklahoma State who asked the optical disk
company to give me a call; I'm sorry I don't have the names to give these
very helpful people proper credit.

The source of a machine-readable Bartlett's Famous Quotations turns out
to be Microsoft.  It is included in a collection on reference tools
on CD ROM called the Microsoft Bookshelf.  Also on the CD are Roget's Thesaurus,
a dictionary, style manual; in all, ten standard reference tools.
Retail cost of the CD is $295, but, as with MS's software and hardware,
educational discounts are available.  Our university qualifies for 60%
discount so it will cost us $118.

I understand that this is MS's first venture into CD publishing which
may account for the fact that I couldn't find this title listed in 
the sources I consulted.  There is also, I understand, a package deal offered
with the CD and a CD player from Microsoft.  The number to call for
dealer information is 1-800-227-4679.  This CD sounds really useful to
both academic and office users; I hope Microsoft will make its existence
more widely known.
