The MacIntosh spelling cam in use when the fainthearts at Apple's legal
department did a trademark search while gearing up for the Mac release
and found that the audio electronic company name MacIntosh was already
there...they decided that McIntosh (the fruit) would be too close for
comfort and took the easy way out: they licensed the name from MacIntosh.

As for the //gs, "granny smith" was a much older project, only
peripherally related to the current Apple// line.  Literally.
