I posted the original query on this for my father.  He informs me
today that he just spoke with Microsoft out in Seattle.  They claim
that a patch does exist to allow Excel to address more than 1 meg of
RAM.  They also said that they would (eventually?) send it to him.
If he gets it, and if there's any interest, I'll post the patch.
