They used to be purchasable by students at Cornell >until about a year ago when they became avaliable only to staff and faculty. The story on the LaserWriters, as I have heard it, is that students might buy them and then use them to go into the bussiness of desktop publishing. In other words, they want the computers being used for personal purposes and not for bussiness purposes. Here's what our policy is and what our prices are at UCSC. Any registered full-time student, faculty or staff member may make up to one (1) major purchase a year of Apple stuff. A major purchase is one of the Macintoshes. Anything else (disk drives, printers, etc) may be purchased as often as you want because the discount is less on those items than on the Macintoshes themselves. Our Bookstore (Baytree) quoted me these prices. However, campus units, such as departments like the Computer Center (where I work) or a division get their stuff via the purchasing department whereas the Bookstore tries to turn a profit on their sales of the following equipment. That's one of the reasons that the prices will differ. The best thing to do is check what the actual discount is before markup by your campus Bookstore. So the Bookstore's prices will be higher than what the University (and the bookstare) get them at before markup. The discount to Universities is very big! Typically the bookstore does a markup of around 10 - 12 per cent after they get them and the super-duper cheap rate. ----------------------------------------------------------- Product Name List Price Campus Retail ----------------------------------------------------------- Mac 512KE $1699.00 $1149.00 MacPlus $2199.00 $1499.00 Mac SE, 2 800K floppies $2898.00 $2100.00 Mac SE, HD20, 1 floppy $3698.00 $2795.00 Mac II, w/std keyboard $3898.00 $2800.00 & 800K floopy Mac II w/std keyboard $5498.00 $3900.00 & HD40, 1 floppy An Extended Keyboard adds $175 to campus retail for the SE or Mac II. Remember, the bookstore sets it's prices and certain Universities will get equipment for less than other universities. In any case, the discount is very substantial and is a very good deal. I'd go for it if I were you. +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | David Vangerov | | Just your average Theater Arts major with a weird thing for computers | | fiatlux@ucscc.BITNET || fiatlux@ucscc.ucsc.EDU || ...!ucbvax!ucscc!fiatlux | +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+
