Summary: Fewer Limits on Student Purchases Here

Here at Berkeley, Students may buy any thing Apple sells in the Mac line,
including Mac IIs and LaserWriters.  They do state that you can only buy
one CPU for personal use.  I wonder if their record keeping is good enough
to handle students who change schools.  The prices are in the same 
neighborhood as those at Cornell.  For instance, a LaserWriter Plus is
$3582 and Mac II HD40 is $3007.  They then slap on a 6% administrative handling
fee and 7% local sales tax, so the final prices are $4062.70 and $3410.54,
respectively.

In case, you wonder whether Apple needs to be concerned about illegal sales
by students, I have a couple of anecdotes.  Some company, I think it was
Apple, recently fired a staff member who made a sham sale of about 100 PCs
to a church organization, planning to resell to grey market dealers.  I also
recall that Apple has had to crack down on sales of LaserWriters at the
company store, because some employees were netting $500 a unit in a resale
scam.  I don't think Apple has placed any restrictions on the Consortium
stores, but universities are often under considerable pressure from local
retail outlets, who resent the not-for-profit stance of most university sales
outlets.
