Summary: upgrade Installer disk before installing!!!

This may have come up before, but I thought I'd pass along something I dis-
covered at work today.  I had installed TOPS on two Mac Pluses that had
System 4.1 already on them.  This was using the March 18, 1987 version of
TOPS, which is the most current.

Everything went fine, but soon after I started getting some real weirdness.
HyperCard would just restart the machine IF TOPS was installed, didn't if
it wasn't.  OK, so it's related to TOPS--I called Centram to see if they
knew of such a problem.  A fellow named Paul called me back in a reasonable
amount of time and soon figured out the problem.

What happens is this: TOPS has no problems with System 4.1  The Installer for
TOPS, however, does half a no-no: it takes several resources from the System
file on the installer disk and puts them in the System file of the target.
This was done to ensure that vital parts of 3.2, for which this was designed,
got installed (such as PACK 0 and INIT 31)

So, when I installed TOPS, it happily replaced some resources with 3.2
versions.  This causes some very funky behaviour occasionally; the funniest one
is asking you to insert your hard disk :-)

Anyway, the solution is to make a backup of your TOPS master, run Apple
Installer for Sys 4.1 on IT, and then use IT to install TOPS on your 4.1
system.  This seems to work.

Hope this helps someone else before they bang their head...
