Oh? First, we're doing it and managing feedback loops on the order of 10's of microseconds just fine. Second, if the working set fits in real memory, then VM disappears just when you need it to. Finally, all you need for real-time is determinism and VM systems are a lot more deterministic than the interrupts that gnarled old real-time hacks love so much. Complex, maybe, but deterministic.
