The early Plexus SVR2.2 manuals suggest that AT&T at least toyed with the idea
of renaming "/dev/tty" to "/dev/termio" in order to accomplish this.  I would
suggest that changing the names of tty devices to /dev/termio/nnn would be less
likely to cause massive confusion.
