Has anybody ever seen an X implementation of grayscale font
display?  I know the X font structure only supports 1-bit
fonts, but there's got to be SOMEONE out there who has seen
the wave of the future, and hacked X to use 8-bit or variable
depth fonts.

If nobody's done it, is there any reason to think it couldn't
be done?  If I can't find an existing implementation, I'm going
to give it a try myself.
