I was doodling Advanced Micro Devices makes a chip called the CADM (Content Addressable Data Manager or something; we used to call it the Sort Buffer internally). Basically, it is a chip with a CAM and an 8-bit processor; it reportedly sorts really fast; it only sorts what's on the chip; it can be cascaded up to 256 times (total of 256 chips in parallel).
