Fine. Now suppose just after this, Emacs decides to auto-save. You get "Auto-saving..." and then "Auto-saving...done". But you never get "ESC-" back! Prompts like this for prefix keys should cause autosaving messages to be cleared, just like other uses of the minibuffer.
