   Has anyone done anything along the lines of a distributed emacs?

Encore makes a terminal server called the Annex. This is the normal way
of talking to their Multimax as there are no terminal ports on the main
machine (except the system control board has two, so it is somewhat like
the SUN). It comes in two flavors: regular, for connecting to an ethernet
attached to any box supporting either telnet of rlogin protocol; and
super, for connecting to a Multimax. In this mode, the terminal driver
lives on the Annex, and, as an added bonus, it runs GNU EMACS partially
on the Annex, and partially on the Multimax. Whether this has anything
to do with the start-server function I don't know.

Drawbacks are that it would seem difficult if not impossible to upgrade
to a new version without either having source or Encore's help.
