  A good reference for anyone interested in the design of sharing
systems (and other computer-sciency things) is Organick's book
on Unix's papa:

  Organick, Elliot I., "The Multics System: An Examination of Its
Structure", Cambridge (The MIT Press), 1972. 

  Is still in print, and the MIT bookstore had it on the shelf when I
was last there..
