Surely someone somewhere has written a program that will help with this. I have in mind something that would let me type "clock project-name" each time I go from working on one project to working on another, and of course a way to check out at the end of the day. It should then be able to produce daily and weekly summaries of how much time is spent on each project. We are running SysV on an AT&T 3B15, if it matters.
