As far as I know, no one has ever successfully converted either
'readnews' or 'vnews' to use NNTP.  At one time, I had someone here at
UCSD who was interested in doing so, but the usual thing happened - he
learned to use 'rn' and becoming dazzled by its versatility, abandoned 
his former beloved newsreaders forever.

The NNTP protocol is simple.  Ripping all of the file opens and reads 
out of 'readnews' and replacing them with protocol transactions isn't.

It might be better to start over - 'readnews' hasn't enough options or
functions that it would be that hard to duplicate, I would hope.  But
no one has done it yet.

Maybe some undergrad who needs a miscellaneous elective credit for a 
programming project?
