I heard (from a fairly reliable source) that the Amiga's UNIX package will run as an Amiga task/library/window, like MS-DOS does on Janus. I also heard (from a different fairly reliable source) that the Amiga's UNIX will not use ANY of the Amiga Kernel, and will only take advantage of the co-processors to do fast text ... no windows, no graphics, no sound, etc. Essentially UNIX on a 68020, that happens to have the word AMIGA stamped on the cover of the box. I hope it's the first case, but we'll see. Both 'informants' were people-who-should-know within CBM. > Rick also said there were some other extremely exciting things coming > from CBM for the Amiga, but he was not at liberty to divulge them. Want some wild speculation? What does the Amiga need right now? - Hard disk boot support (KS 1.2.1 ?) - A faster file system (KS 1.2.1 ?) - A scan-doubler (in the works from third parties, CBM too?) - 1MB chip mem (add on to A500 and x2000 in the near future) - Streaming tape backup, SCSI and/or ST506 - Higher resolution (like 1024x800, being worked on by 3rd parties) - A laser printer (CBM announced plans for it a long time ago) - An NTSC digitizer (Unless they're depending on 3rd parties) - Native 68020 support for all models - Faster CPU/Coprocessor/Memory speeds - Other-computer emulators (Mac, ST) - More 'name' software titles ..Bob -- Bob Page, U of Lowell CS Dept. page@ulowell.{uucp,edu,csnet}
