Lines: 52 Summary: External Ram Disk A while ago I posted an article about an building an external ram disk. The project will go ahead!!! Thanks to the people who sent suggestions. I did some timings for compiles on the hard disk vs ram disk. Compiling the terminal program posted here years ago by Bammi: Everything on hardisk: 00:03:50 " " ramdisk 00:01:30 The final marketing will probably be a kit. Simply, you get the custom chip and a pc board. Depending on what rams you use it will have a max of 8 meg. You supply the rams, power supply, box. Some people also seemed confused in there replies, again here are the straight forward advantages: o Doesn't use system core, this is still an advantage even if you have 4 meg st. o lives even if you power down the ST o less wear on your disk drives o it's faster than a hard disk, I don't know by how much yet. The above timings are a bit of cheat as the ram disk is in system memory. I have to figure out the transfer rate of the system ramdisk and then I should be able to estimate the performance of th external ram disk. Don't expect to see this thing before Xmas, as I'm very low priority in the fab queue. To make your HARD DISK quieter put it on some foam, A desk makes such a good sounding board. Works for floppies too. Does anyone out there use PROFF and fixed the ".wr" so that it doesn't do a break??? Since my motorcyle accident the systems people changed login id hence everything. Mail to me now goes something like this: ....!alberta!calgary!crash ^ |_ Where's Calgary? check out the current of Time. Glen Stone
