To all of those that responded to my query about
CZ1 / Roland MP401 problems...

Yes, it was just another bug and a simple one at 
that. It seems that my friend was not loading the
patch info into (i believe) 12 bit words. He was
just sending the bytes un-padded or whatever.
This was tough over the phone - he in michigan,
me in new jersey. For those reading this ..
