One of the best references on desktop publishing is "The Illustrated Handbook
of Desktop Publishing and Typesetting," by Michael Klepper, 770 (!) pages.
It has the most comprehensive lists of programs, vendors, and such I've ever
seen, and also has lots of chapters on useful subjects, including one on
PostScript (quite useful in my mind).
