If you want a really good scanner, look at the Xerox 7650.  It has
programmable resolution (divisors of 1200spi), A4 size, asynchronous
operation, very good panchromatic response.   The really neat thing is
the internal image processing options for edge enhancement, de-screen
and re-screen, cropping,  histogram equalization (pre-scan), etc. etc.

A VERY nice device for photos, line art, etc.  You get a good signal out
(low noise), which means your software can really manipulate the image
without loosing quality.  The bad news -- its not cheap.  Should be
hookable to your Sun's.
